TTEC seeks Internet broadband

Tuesday, August 14 2007

THE TRINIDAD and Tobago Electricity Commission is to approach the local Telecommunications Authority (TATT) for clearance to provide broadband Internet services.

The Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Indarjit Singh, made the announcement yesterday before a massive audience at the Trinidad and Tobago Energy Conference at the Hilton.

Singh, admitting that TTEC continues to operate “with a deficit,” even in the wake of electricity rate increases, unleashed information on a barrage of projects which the Commission has in the pipeline.

TTEC he said, was in the process of installing a new fibre optic network and new power stations, including a 65-megawatt station at Cove, Tobago; a 225-megawatt station slated for Union Estate; and another at Brechin Castle where 300-megawatt station will become available by 2009.

Another power station is to be built at Sea Lots, Port of Spain powering 150 megawatt by 2012 and a new 217 megawatts combined cycle steam generation plant. Speaking on initiatives embarked on by TTEC, Singh noted that in strides made on the renewable energy front, “three small solar electric systems have been installed and are being evaluated.”

Singh also said they were working with other agencies in developing a wind turbine project.

He also emphasised the importance placed by TTEC on its carbon emissions reduction programme (RSW).
