Imagine an 85 percent reduction in the rates of robberies and burglaries throughout the country. Impossible? Maybe in the past, but what may have once been an impossible dream is soon to be reality.

There has been a breakthrough in crime-fighting initiatives globally and the wave will soon hit Trinidad and Tobago. In a time when crime rates are soaring and there seem to be no more answers, there is still hope. And one solution to the problem is SelectaDNA!

Launched in October 2004, SelectaDNA is the first true DNA security system in the Property Marking field. The product can mark any item of value to uniquely identify it by using synthetic DNA which cannot be analysed or copied by unauthorised parties.

It is a forensic marking system which comes in kit form for domestic and commercial use. The product contains a liquid specifically DNA-coded to each individual customer or company, and which can be easily applied to any items of value. If equipment is stolen and later found, police can link it directly with the crime scene, not only allowing the property to be returned to its owner, but also increasing the chance of theft conviction.

How does it work? The SelectaDNA product range consists of glues, gels, greases and aerosols each containing a unique DNA code, which can be used to uniquely mark and trace both items of property and criminals. It works by invisibly marking property or commercial premises with a unique synthetic profile. The solution glows bright blue under UV light. It stays on valuables indefinitely, on offenders’ skin for between one to two weeks and on clothes for up to six months.

Every bottle is registered in the SelectaDNA database which will be referred to by police to aid investigations and solve crimes. If an object or a person is marked with SelectaDNA the solution will glow bright blue when placed under UV light.

The SelectaDNA code can be deciphered by a molecular genetic laboratory which has been supplied with a SelectaDNA reagent kit designed to detect and analyse SelectaDNA samples.

SelectaDNA is already being used throughout the UK and Europe to prevent and deter burglary by many homes, schools, hospitals, banking institutions and businesses that own expensive and vital equipment. It has been integrated into the police and domestic systems throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, The USA and Canada, Latin America and most recently in the Caribbean, Jamaica. Looking at the high rates of larceny, burglaries and robberies in Trinidad and Tobago for the year, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, (4531 cases as of April 2012), there is the strong belief that these products will revolutionise the combat against crime and assist in dramatically reducing their rates of occurrence.

Many countries have been successful in accomplishing this, including the UK with an 85 percent decrease in theft and burglary where used, and New Zealand showing a 55 percent decrease within the first four months of its use.
