|Ataklan in concert tonight |
Wednesday, March 2 2011
The third edition of Right Here, Right Now: The Intimate Concert Series continues with featured artist Ataklan, who will perform tonight at the Trinidad Theatre Workshop (TTW), corner Norfolk Street and Jerningham Avenue, Belmont.
Since bursting onto the local music circuit in 1991, Mark Jiminez (Ataklan) has attracted quite an avid following, with well known songs such as “Morvant,” “Flambeaux,” “Naked Walk” and the ever popular “Flood (On the Main Road).”
He has remained true to his craft over the years, his consistency being evident in consecutive CD releases: Atanomical, Atamorphosis and Atavival.
As a Trinidadian singer/song-writer, Ataklan delivers catchy musical offerings with lyrics steeped in a profound awareness of his roots, culture and heritage. “I have always respected the elders in music, particularly stalwarts like the Mighty Shadow, the late Ras Short I and Andre Tanker,” he confessed.
Though scheduled to take place just one week prior to the main Carnival celebrations, tonight’s show promises to offer a decidedly different type of musical fare from what usually obtains during the season. Patrons will be treated to familiar Ataklan favourites, as well as several new songs from his soon-to-be-released CD which was recorded in Jamaica. This latest compilation features collaborations with Winston Bailey (Shadow) and William “Bunny Rugs” Clark, lead vocalist with reggae band Third World.
The Intimate Concert Series is produced collaboratively by Foreday Mornin. Entertainment, TTW and The Theron Shaw Project. The series facilitates an intimate and alternative view of the works of each showcased artist, musically supported by The Theron Shaw Project. Shaw’s own music will also be a staple on the concert series.
Showtime is 7 pm, while a drinks-inclusive cover charge of $100 will be collected.
