Under the Trees serves up exciting Carnival menu
By Vernon Khelawan Friday, January 24 2014
It’s Carnival again and Normandie’s Under the Trees (UTT) entertainment menu has be prepared and ready for consumption. This year, things are a little different because the entertainment chefs have moved to spice up the menu, even after the Carnival has ended.
This year the 3canal group will play an integral role in proceedings and they will launch the season on Friday January 31 with their “Carnival Comin” in their own inimitable Rapso style. Patrons will also enjoy the sounds of the Laventille Rhythm Section and Shurwayne Winchester.
Greater emphasis has been placed on the calypso art form this season in what is being called “Tent Week”, when for three consecutive nights, February 17 through 19, singers from three of the nation’s top tents will be on the Trees’ stage, in a programme that will feature other entertainers on those three Tent nights. Top calypsonians will be chosen from Kaiso House (February 17), Klassic Russo (February 18) and Kalypso Karavan (February 19) to perform on those nights. Patrons will also enjoy some surprise artistes during these shows.
The usual three all-inclusive fetes begin with “Mini Veni” on Sunday February 9, which will feature Imij and Company and 3canal together with a few guest artistes. “Hearts on Fire” the Normandie’s own all-inclusive for charity, with profits going to Medianet Haiti relief Fund and the Maraval Rotary Club, comes off on Sunday February 23 with music being provided by 3Canal, Cut and Clear Crew, Pelham Goddard and Roots and Caribbean Airlines Invaders Steelband. On Carnival Sunday (March 2) “Just Penny” hosted by former Miss Universe Janelle ‘Penny’ Commissiong Chow will bring down the curtain on the fete aspect of the Trees.
Since Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of the season, a very romantic evening has been planned for lovers young and old with a special programme that allows for an intimate dinner, dancing under the Samaan Tree to music provided by H2O Flo and their band as well as Pelham Goddard and his Roots band. There will also be special appearances by Denyse Plummer and Baron, with selections aimed directly at the heart.
David Rudder, a regular fixture at UTT will produce his own concert “The Power of the Music” on February 26, when power of King David could rustle the trees and awaken the Carnival spirit in the audience.
A most innovative feature under the trees in 2014 is a show that aims to showcase a selection of the best musical talents of Trinidad and Tobago in a programme called “Trinidad Interactive Music Expo” which will feature artistes like Calypso Rose, Machel Montano, Fay Ann Lyons and her husband Bunji Garlin.
On Carnival Friday (February 28), “Under the Trees” invokes the spirits of the Calypso Monarchy with a show called “The Monarchs” as they stroll down Memory Lane with some of the past Calypso Monarchs like Calypso Rose, Black Stalin, David Rudder, the Mighty Shadow and reigning Monarch Pink Panther accompanied by Pelham Goddard and his Roots band with MC David Bereaux.
For those people who hang around after Carnival, the Trees will produce something called “Feel Good Friday” with David Rudder and some special guests on Friday March 7 and the following night (March 8) the “real” Las’ Lap 3Canal and the Cut and Clear Crew will return with special guests to close out the 2014 Carnival season.
