Homicide detectives investigating the murder of schoolteacher Bhasmat Seemungal-Akaloo yesterday received instructions from Acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard to charge the two suspects whom they now have in custody.
Police arrested a police officer and his spiritual advisor, for the abduction and stabbing death of Seemungal-Akaloo.
The two men charged with the schoolteacher’s murder, are expected to appear before a Sangre Grande magistrate on Tuesday morning.
The police officer’s spiritual advisor was arrested yesterday after Homicide investigators raided his Belmont home and seized a quantity of female clothing and electronic items they believe belonged to Seemungal-Akaloo.
The search was carried out by a party of officers which included ASP Johnny Abraham, Inspector Stanley Ramdeen, and PC Cyril Ramoutar.
The officers acting on information, went to the home of the 40-year-old man, and reportedly found the items in a room at the house.
The suspect was taken to the Region Two Homicide Bureau’s office, where he reportedly gave a statement to police.
A relative of Seemungal-Akaloo who has been in custody since Tuesday, has already given a key statement to the police.
Three other persons are also expected to be charged in connection with the murder but they are said to be in hiding.
Seemungal-Akaloo, 44, was taken from her home at 425 Guaico Tamana Road, at about 5 am on Tuesday.
Police reports stated, the assailants came to the woman’s house driving a van which looked much like her brother’s.
However, as she walked out her front door, she was grabbed by the suspects and shoved into the waiting vehicle. The intruders, the police were told, tied up the husband, and ransacked the house. Seemungal-Akaloo’s body was discovered mere hours later at San Louis Road, a short distance from her home.
According to a post-mortem report, Seemungal-Akaloo’s throat was slit and she had multiple stab wounds to the body.
