Murders hit 398

Sunday, September 27 2009

In the most gruesome of killings, a man was shot several times and then beheaded at an unfinished building in Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain.

He was one of two men murdered within the jurisdiction of the Homicide Bureau’s Port-of-Spain office, yesterday.

Also killed yesterday was Wayne Tyson, who was shot at the Community Centre at Trou Macaque, Laventille. The killings have pushed the murder toll for the year to 398.

At Sea Lots, Police were called in at Production Drive at about 7 am where the body of an unidentified man was seen with his head separated from his body. Up to late yesterday, he had not been identified after residents told investigators the man was not known from the area.

Residents also told investigators they heard gunshots late Friday night but paid no attention as they were accustomed hearing the explosions.

Sources said the victim’s body was found in a pool of blood and his head several feet away, in a small hole. Meantime, in an unrelated incident, URP employee Wayne Tyson, 39, of Trou Macaque, was liming with friends at the Community Centre, close to midday, when a gunman walked up to him and started shooting.

The group scattered, but Tyson fell to the ground after he was shot. He was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigators are yet to determine a motive for the killings. Homicide Bureau detectives Sgt Jayson Forde and PCs Hezron Lynch and Stanley Romeo are investigating.
