A Laventille man who was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife in 1983, yesterday allegedly took his own life in his prison cell.

An infirmary officer making his usual rounds at the Maximum Security Prison at Golden Grove, at about 3.10 am, reportedly discovered Cecil Alexander hanging in his cell. Investigators believe the 62-year-old prisoner used his bed sheet to hang himself. The District Medical Officer as well as Arouca Police visited the scene, before the removal of the convict’s body.

According to a release from the Ministry of National Security, Alexander was imprisoned for the past 31 years, after he was held for the murder of his wife in February, 1978. An investigation has been ordered into the incident, following which a report is expected to be submitted to the Ministry.
