ACTING POLICE Commissioner Stephen Williams has appealed to senior and junior police officers to give full support and encouragement to Canadian Wayne Gibbs who arrives here later this month to take up the position of Commissioner of Police.
Williams also urged the officers to do everything they can to return Trinidad and Tobago to the paradise they once knew it to be.
Williams was at the time delivering the feature address at an awards ceremony for members of the Police Eastern Division at the Mayaro Resource Centre on Saturday evening.
Williams congratulated some 250 police officers who received certificates for excellence and about another 60 who received special awards.
He told them the awards were in recognition of their outstanding work and noted that many of them had gone beyond the call of duty to ensure a safe country.
He encouraged them to continue to show their unwavering resolve to make the Eastern Division one of the best in TT. The Acting Commissioner told the officers that to achieve excellence they must have a plan based on the policing for people philosophy.
He added that the policing for people philosophy had to be communicated to all members of staff and community stakeholders.
Williams said the police officers had to embrace community partnerships and pointed out that they would only know how efficient and effective these strategies are when there is an absence of crime and disorder in communities. Williams paid special tribute to Senior Superintendent Glenda Jennings-Smith, who heads the Eastern Division and presented her with a special award in recognition of her leadership ability and outstanding contribution to the division.
He noted that she led by example and there were many reports aboutn her being in the field, day and night.
Most of the special awards went to officers at the Mayaro Police Station where Inspector Odette Lewis is in charge.
Sgt Wayne Doodhai from that station and acting Inspector Ramdatt Gumai from Rio Claro received awards for best Station Commander and Team Spirit. Sgt. Doodhai also received an award for the highest detection rate for crime in the Eastern Division, while Cpl Navin Maharaj and PC Allan Khan received awards for best detection by investigation.
The award for the Most Improved Police Station went to Valencia.
