Teen killed, cop critical

Wednesday, September 21 2011

AN ACCIDENT yesterday in Rio Claro has claimed the life of a teenager while a policeman who sustained injuries in the said accident is fighting for his life at hospital. The victim has been identified as Christopher Gillead, 19, of Dades Trace Junction in Rio Claro.

Cpl Nizmudeen Mo-hammed who is posted at the Rio Claro Police Station, sustained multiple injuries and up to last evening was warded at the San Fernando General Hospital.

A police report stated Gillead was proceeding south in his green Kia car along the Nap-arima/Mayaro Road in Libertville Village, Rio Claro, at about 1 am when tragedy struck.

The police report added that Mohammed was proceeding in the opposite direction, in a gold Nissan Almera car when it is believed both vehicles collided.

The loud collision awakened residents who telephoned the police station. Officers of the Rio Claro Police Station and the Fire Station responded and found both men slumped behind the wheels of their respective cars.

Fire officers had to use the cutting device commonly called the “jaws of life” to remove the two injured men.

However Gillead was pronounced dead at the scene. Cpl Mohammed was rushed to hospital where he remains warded.

Ag Sgt Samaroo of the Rio Claro Police Station is investigating.

In an unrelated incident in Rio Claro, Inspector Steve Nanoon led a road traffic exercise which saw the arrest of a forest ranger for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police officers also issued ten tickets for various traffic offences.
