Truck owner and driver held for stolen cashew nuts

By NALINEE SEELAL Thursday, December 15 2011

A 43-year-old Sangre Grande businessman, who is the owner of a fleet of trucks, and a 34-year- old Santa Cruz man were detained on Tuesday by Customs and Excise Division Officers in connection with the larceny of a 20-foot container of cashew nuts valued at $975,000.

The exercise which led to the arrests of the two men was spearheaded by Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Anthony Chandler.

The two were subsequently handed over to officers at the Port-of-Spain CID and up until late yesterday, they were being questioned by a party of police officers under the supervision of Senior Superintendent Wayne Boyd, and Acting ASP Ajith Persad.

Police expect to make a major breakthrough in the investigation into the missing cashew nuts soon, and others are expected to be detained.

The container with the cashew nuts arrived in the country from India on December 3, and was consigned to Nigel Gopeesingh, the General Manager of Regal Foods of Freeman Road, St Augustine. Last Thursday, when Gopeesingh went to clear his container at the port, he discovered that his container was missing, and false documents had been used by someone to clear the container with the cashew nuts. A report was made to the Port-of-Spain CID and Customs and Excise Division and on Monday last, the empty container was discovered at Caribbean Drive, Pt Lisas, minus the cashew nuts.

Several business places were also searched, but up to late yesterday the missing cashew nuts were not found.
