A 53-year-old Laventille man was shot dead on Friday night after viewing a football match at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

According to police reports, at about 10 pm, Anthony Belford, of Prizgar Lands, Laventille, left the stadium after the match in the company of friends Kareem Edwards, of Pleasant Terrace, Morvant, and 30-year-old Brent Henry, of John John Road, Laventille.

The three got into a white Toyota Fielder wagon, but as they were driving off they were confronted by a man wearing a white t-shirt and three-quarter pants. The man fired several shots at the three men, then fled. The vehicle crashed into a nearby wall and the three friends were rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital by passers-by.

Belford was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital while his friends remained warded up until yesterday in serious but stable conditions.

Yesterday, police said they had not determined a motive for the shootings but investigations were continuing.

In a separate incident, police also reported that at about 3 am yesterday, Jonathan Joseph, 27, of Piccadilly Street, Laventille, was walking along Duncan Street, close to Independence Square, when a white Nissan B14 pulled alongside him. He reported hearing several gunshots, and feeling a burning sensation on his right ankle. Joseph was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where he was warded in stable condition.
