Grande crash survivor for surgery tomorrow

Wednesday, August 8 2012

Nicholas Ramdass, the lone survivor in a car crash last Tuesday in Sangre Grande that left three men dead, will undergo surgery tomorrow at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope. Both Ramdass’ legs were broken in the accident.

Nicholas was one of four men in a white Toyota Camry who were all heading to their respective jobs via their usual car pool, when the driver of the vehicle, Mazarus Ali, 41, lost control of the car which collided with two other vehicles and then ploughed into a lamp post in the vicinity of Jacob Hill, Wallerfield. The other men in the car were Linchan Rangoobar, 52, and Rodney Singh, 34.

Nicholas and Singh worked at Kaleidoscope, Port-of-Spain; Ali at the Botanical Gardens and Ragoobar worked as a driver for the Ministry of Housing.

Benjamin Ramdass, father of Nicholas, reported that the middle and upper bones in both his son’s legs were broken, and the skin in his left leg was punctured.

“The doctors used weights to straighten the bones in his legs to avoid the left leg being shorter than the right. The bones are resting on top one another right now, that is what the surgery is intended to fix so he could come home,” he said.

Benjamin said Nicholas was still on the oxygen machine; that he was in a lot of pain, not eating a lot, and was continuously asking about his friends. He said Nicholas was unaware that his friends had died, and that he was constantly asking to go home.

He said, too, that Nicholas’s heart rate must be stabilised before the doctors can operate on his legs.

“The right of his body is slightly burnt from the injuries and his blood count is very low,” said Benjamin, adding that Nicholas was in need of six pints of blood. He said the treatment by the doctors and nurses has been quite swift and he has no complaints about the treatment his son has been receiving at the hospital.
