26 percent of 2012 murders in Laventille area

Thursday, December 20 2012

An estimated 26 percent of the murders in Trinidad and Tobago for the year thus far, have occurred within the community of Laventille and its environs.

So said Acting Police Commissioner Stephen Williams at yesterday’s weekly media, briefing at the Police Administration Building, in Port-of-Spain. The briefing followed a short promotional ceremony at which 51 sergeants were promoted to the rank of inspector. (SEE PAGE 9)

Williams told the media that for the year so far, the Police Service has recorded 405 homicides, 367 of which were murders.

“Approximately 26 percent of these murders occurred in Laventille and its surrounding communities. We will like to focus on this geographical space. Our vision is for citizens to walk every part of TT free from any form of interference and crime,” said Williams.

This, was the “ultimate goal” of the Police Service — to reach a stage where crime was not such a prominent issue in the country, he said. In stating the Police Service’s aspirations for 2013, Williams said, “We are seeking clear and obvious improvements for the people of TT. Violence is not the way to solve problems.”

He encouraged people to share love with each other and beseeched citizens to think twice before acting. Said Williams: “We aspire to have a continuous impact on crime and realise a larger drop in crime in 2013.”
