Jamaican jailed for south store robbery

Tuesday, March 5 2013

TWO Jamaicans yesterday appeared before a San Fernando magistrate charged with the February 23 robbery at Detour Store on High Street, San Fernando. Kenroy Williams, 42, of Kingston, Jamaica, pleaded guilty before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington, to robbing Detour Gents store, of $3,700.

His fellow countryman, Glenroy Francis, 30, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of $10,000, but on condition that he surrenders his passport.

Wellington heard from the police court prosecutor, PC Cleyon Seedan, that at about 1.50 pm, he (Williams) entered the store and gave the cashier US$1,200 in exchange for TT currency. He collected $7,200, the court was told, but then Williams asked the store manager, Riad Atteih, to change a further sum of United States currency, but was refused.

Seedan went on to tell Wellington that Williams insisted that he change all his money and when he did not receive a positive response from Atteih, he requested that his US$1,200 be returned to him.

Wellington heard that when the cashier in the store handed him the money, he gave her only $3,500, retaining $3,700. Williams then walked out the store and attempted to escape in a waiting vehicle.

Atteih followed Williams and assisted police in arresting the accused.

Wellington sentenced Williams to six months in jail.
