Nelson Street gangster held in Cedros

A 34-YEAR-OLD Port-of-Spain man who police have identified as a member of the Nelson Street gang was yesterday arrested and charged by PC Ramlal with trafficking in marijuana. The man was held within 500 metres of the Lochmaben RC Primary School in Cedros.

The suspect was held during a nine-hour police exercise which ended midday yesterday in the south western division. According to a report, officers were conducting a search at the home of a well-known drug dealer in Cedros when they observed a man hiding in a white Nissan Almera car parked near the primary school. Officers approached the vehicle and the suspect was searched and three grammes of marijuana found in his possession. He gave police his home addresses as Nelson Street, Port-of-Spain and Carenage.

During the exercise, which began at 3 am, the party of officers which included Sgts Mahabir, Titus and Solomon, Cpls Seecharan and Boodlal and members of the South Western Division Task Force with the assistance of the Canine Unit went to Southern Main Road, Limefield, Cedros where they arrested and charged a 40-year-old farmer for possession of two pipe-guns and three rounds of 12 gauge cartridges. PC Valdez laid the charges.

Police also raided a house at Bamboo Village, Cedros and arrested and charged an 18-year-old woman and her common-law husband, aged 27, with possession of three grammes of cocaine and three grammes of marijuana. The charges were laid by WPC Blaize.

A total of 11 other persons were arrested on outstanding warrants. The suspects are expected to appear before a magistrate in the Point Fortin Court on Monday. Yesterday’s exercise was co-ordinated by Snr Supt Ramsey, Supt Sampath, ASP Belfon and supervised by Insp Seedarie.
