Doubles vendor on rape charge

Saturday, October 26 2013

A 39-YEAR-OLD doubles vendor from Cunupia appeared before Magistrate Gillian Scotland in the Chaguanas First Court yesterday charged with rape and buggery of a 15-year-old Guyanese national who is holidaying with her mother in Trinidad.

Vishram Harripersad who sells doubles in Port-of-Spain was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 with a surety to be approved by a Clerk of Peace. The bail was given under the condition that he stay 100 metres away from the virtual complainant and have no contact with her directly or indirectly. The charges as read out in court yesterday states that sometime on Tuesday October 22, the teenager who has been in the country since September, was alone in her motherís apartment, when a man entered the apartment and sexually assaulted her.

WPC Phillip of the Cunupia Police Station laid the charges against the accused. Harripersad, through his attorney Tarradath Singh, told the magistrate he (the accused) is a diabetic and needs insulin treatment twice daily. Sgt Shiva Boodoo objected to bail on the grounds that a proper trace had not yet been conducted on Harripersad to determine if he has a criminal record and/or pending cases. But bail was granted and Harripersad was ordered to reappear in court on November 11.
