Pathologist assault file for DPP

By NALINEE SEELAL Tuesday, January 28 2014

POLICE officers probing the alleged assault of senior Forensic Pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov are expected to approach Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard today for instructions on how to proceed in the matter.

Newsday understands that investigators were supposed to lay an information dossier at the Port-of-Spain Magistrates’ Court before proceeding via a summons in the alleged assault. However there was a change of heart yesterday and a decision was taken to have the matter referred to the DPP for guidance.

Newsday understands Constable Ravi Mohan who was the person investigating the alleged assault has now been replaced by a Police Sergeant of the St Clair Police Station. That Sergeant is expected to meet with DPP Gaspard today for directions on the matter.

On December 2, Alexandrov was at the holding bay of the Forensic Science Centre in St James when he was allegedly attacked by an official who also works at the Centre.

Alexandrov has claimed he was grabbed by the tie, kicked and then dragged out of the mortuary room.

Alexandrov said the alleged assault was witnessed by three Crime Scene Officers and a police officer, with the latter seeing the incident on a screen at a security booth via a surveillance camera.

Alexandrov made a report to the St Clair Police and later sought medical attention.

Yesterday Alexandrov told Newsday he remains traumatised over the incident and has received countless emails from other pathologists from Russia, the United States and other countries who after reading the exclusive article in last Sunday Newsday edition, saying they were “flabbergasted” by what had happened. Alexandrov has been practising at the Forensic Science Centre for the past six years and is expected to leave this country in a year’s time to settle in the United States where he has citizenship.
