Relative: Ezekiel getting betterBy Cecily Asson Tuesday, April 19 2011
The condition of four-year-old Ezekiel Renne-Cambridge continues to improve every day at a private nursing home where he remains following his transfer from the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) on Friday, relatives told Newsday yesterday.
“He is getting better,” one relative said. “He is improving daily and is able to interact with his parents.”
Last Tuesday night, while in the company of his grandmother Yolande Renne, the kindergarten student was mauled by two German Shepherd dogs near the family’s home at Crissy Lane, Palmiste.
He underwent two surgeries for the severe injuries he sustained as a result of the attack by the dogs and spent four days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was subsequently taken off life support and moved out of the ICU before being transferred to private health care.
The relative said they wanted to ensure the child’s privacy, as on Friday, while in the open ward at SFGH someone tried to take pictures of his injuries.
The dogs’ owner Vidya Emrith told Newsday she is committed to assisting the family “in whatever way possible” in ensuring that Ezekiel returns to full health.
“Whatever it takes I will see to it that his life and that of his family return to normalcy,” Emrith said. “They have not asked for anything but I have approached them and they told me in time they will talk to me.” Emrith said she continues to maintain a civil relationship with the boy’s relatives.
She also said she has accepted “full responsibility for what has happened,” and insisted the dogs will never return to the neighbourhood but would instead be sent to a security firm.
Newsday has however learnt that the dogs are still being kept at the home of a relative in south Trinidad since being removed by animal handlers from Emrith’s home last Tuesday.
Emrith was questioned by police last Friday. Snr Supt Donald Denoon told Newsday the report on the investigation was expected to reach his desk yesterday.
