Jazz events start in August

Monday, June 29 2009

JATT is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the education, development, preservation and promotion of Jazz music in Trinidad and Tobago. The membership has over ten years of experience specialising in jazz education, performing at concerts, and promoting jazz music.

Founded in September 2007, JATT has planned a series of events commencing August 2009 – March 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago. The week will kick off with a “Meet and Greet Launch” on August 11 where students, lecturers, directors and sponsors will have the opportunity to network and share ideas on America’s classical music.

The highlight of the evening will be the introduction of the Calypso Real Book, authored by JATT.’s president, Sean Thomas, respected jazz musician and educator.

The book, similar to the Jazz Real Book, focuses on traditional and current calypso songs, and gives musicians and music teachers around the world tools to use when exploring this genre. The book also offers an opportunity to connect students to this rich legacy.

From August 12-18, JATT will present the Summer Holistic Learn, Listen and Play Jazz Workshop. Designed to explore scales, chords, rhythms, blues, spirituals, gospel, chorale, opera and calypso, the workshop will allow students to study, interact and jam with the finest local and regional jazz musicians.

Invited lecturers include Trinidadian mezzo-sopranist Anne Fridal, Chalkdust, Leroy Clarke, Denise Demming, Arturo Tappin, Clive Zanda, Mungal Patasar and 2006 National Trumpet Competition winner Etienne Charles.

Additionally there will be a concert entitled “Common Wealth of Sounds” scheduled for August 16, featuring local and regional musicians.

Featured musicians include tenor and soprano saxophonist Luther Francois; Sean Thomas; Arturo Tappin; Etienne Charles; Clive Zanda; Douglas Reddon; Dave Marcellin and Samantha Gooden.

Other events planned for 2009-2010 are as follows:

“Kids Jazz Festival”

“Rhythm Stories”

“Other Faces”

“Jazz Up The Runway”

“Jazz Globalization Week”

Accoring to a release JATT. strongly believes that it can play a major role in the development of the society through educating, developing, preserving and promoting jazz music in Trinidad and Tobago.
