KARISSA MAHARAJ captured the Miss Divali Nagar title on Sunday night in a pageant that was one of the highlights of the ten days of Divali Nagar in Chaguanas.

First runner-up was crowd favourite Samantha Kandhoo, while second runner-up was Nirmala Ragbir and Amrita Ramkissoon was third runner-up.

In addition to the 11 pageant delegates, the show featured guest performances by the Malick All Stars Tassa Group, the Courts Nirvana Dance Group and the Aspara Dance Company of Guyana.

The D Rampersad Indian Orchestra, led by Teddy Bissambhar, was electrifying.

Also performing on the night was Dr Winston Tolan of Jamaica.

India’s High Commissioner to TT, Malay Mishra, the NCIC’s guest for the night, in his address at the function said: “There is a spark of the light of divinity which pervades in all of us and we must use it for the betterment of mankind.”

“We need to discover the evolution of the divinity which we are all carrying.”

The High Commissioner added: “The light is not outside of us.

It is within our souls. God is not sitting in the Temple or the Church or in the Mosque. God is sitting right within us as an expression of divinity.

“This light of divinity comes to us in the brightness of the deeya which lifts our soul to unbelievable heights for the improvement of mankind.”
