Tobagonian makes soca debut

Friday, February 5 2010

GRENADA’S reigning Soca Monarch and Road March King, Mr Killa (Hollice Mapp) is in the finals of next week’s Bmobile Blackberry International Soca Monarch competition. On Fantastic Friday at the Queen’s Park Oval, Mr Killa will perform “Swing It Away”, a song which took Grenada by storm last year. The soca star is hoping to create history for Grenada by winning the title.

The last time Mr Killa, who has won the Soca Monarch in Grenada three times, last appeared in the International Soca Monarch competition in 2005, he placed fifth with “Wine If Yuh Wining”.

“Performing in Trinidad for the finals is a great opportunity and 2005 was an excellent experience. Just to be a part of the competition was a blessing, so I am looking forward to it again. I’m very creative, so on the final night anything can happen. Right now I am focussing on my presentation. I want to make Grenada proud.

“I’m having a great time in Trinidad. The Carnival is very exciting, so I feel good,” Mr Killa said. “I love the Carnival here. I shared a stage with Machel Montano, KMC and many others. It’s always great to perform here.”

After Trinidad Carnival Mr Killa is planning to do several overseas gigs to showcase his talent. He said he doesn’t only stick to soca but dabbles in other genres.

“After Trinidad I’ll be going to Italy and Germany. I have a lot to do, so I’ll be very busy. As an entertainer I also do Dancehall and Reggae and various combinations of music,” he said.

Also in the pipelines for Mr Killa are collaborations with various artistes. Next year, he will team up with Benji (Rodney Le Blanc).
