Big bands compete for $1 million

DEFENDING bmobile National Panorama champions PCS Silver Stars will play in position eight at the grand finals on Carnival Saturday at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain.

The band hailing from Newtown, Port-of-Spain, will perform Edwin Pouchet’s arrangement of “Battle Zone”.

TCL Group Skiffle Bunch, of San Fernando, will be first before the judges in the large band category. They have opted to play “Pan On Fire”.

Petrotrin Phase 11 Pan Groove, the band that scored the most points in the semi-final stage will perform at number seven. Their tune of choice is “Pan Army” composed by Len Boogsie Sharpe and Kernel Roberts.

Saturday’s event will showcase ten medium and ten large conventional bands. Winner in the latter group will take home $1million.

Patrons will not come away empty-handed as three persons can win an airline ticket to any North American destination courtesy Caribbean Airlines.

Showtime is 6 pm.

The line up in the large band category is:

2. WITCO Desperadoes

3. rbtt Redemption Sound Setters

4. bp Renegades

5. Neal & Massy Trinidad All Stars

6. NLCB Fonclaire

7. Petrotrin Phase 11 Pan Groove

8. PCS Silver Stars

9. Caribbean Airlines Invaders

10. Solo Harmonites

There are five Tobago bands among the ten finalists in the medium band category. Katzenjammers, NLCB Buccooneers, Carib Dixieland, West Side Symphony and Steel Xplosion will perform at positions one, two, five, seven and eight respectively.

The following is the order of appearance of the medium bands.

1. Katzenjammers

2. NLCB Buccooneers

3. Couva Joylanders

4. Valley Harps

5. Carib Dixieland

6. Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille

7. West Side Symphony

8. Steel Xplosion

9. Curepe Scherzando

10 Sforzata

Tickets for the bmobile National Panorama Finals will go on sale today at the Queen’s Park Savannah Ticket Booth and Skinner Park, San Fernando, daily between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm. Cost of tickets are $350 — Paddock Stands; $200 — Northern Greens (Covered) and $60 — Track (Bleachers)
