ON JANUARY 30 the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs (MSYA) hosted the Mayaro Community Sport Festival at the Mayaro Recreational Ground. This festival was designed to help alleviate crime, provide a positive source of engagement for the youth and to provide the community with the opportunity to socialise and unite through sporting events.

Started promptly at 7am the festival began with a 5k marathon. Leroy Jones and Daniela Warrick dominated in the over 20 age bracket and Gabrielle Alex and Jamille Joseph got the better of their opponents in the under 20 age group.Other members of the community flocked to participate or spectate in other events such as football, cricket, basketball, other track and field events and novelty events. Football being one of the more popular events had an immense spectatorship as team Peter Hill Sweaters scored a convincing eight goals against Pan Handle to ensure their win in the tournament.

Bringing many people from different spheres of life together, this event allowed all of them to express themselves through sport and healthy competition. A community once plagued and known for major criminal activity, Mayaro got the opportunity to bond under MSYA’s sport mandate of Total Participation.
