A contingent of 17 Bishop Anstey High School (BAHS) Port-of-Spain students, two teachers and seven chaperones toured Costa Rica and Panama between July 9 to 16. The tour was organised by BAHS’ foreign Language department, in conjunction with Trinidadian-based tour company, Exciting Destinations, and Jamaican-based Centro Latino.

Ingrid Govia, vice principal of BAHS, explained, “The aim of the tour was to provide Spanish language students, ranging from Forms three to six, an opportunity to become immersed in, as well as to practice the Spanish language in an authentic Spanish environment.”

The students were exposed to various cultural, historical and natural vistas of both countries, lending to a truly holistic learning experience. Places visited in Costa Rica ranged from the Irazu Volcano, the Orosi Valley, the Afro-Caribbean influenced town of Limon, the capital San Jose and its various cathedrals, craft markets, monuments and museums such as El Museo de Oro, and the Teatro Nacional.

In Panama, the girls visited the historic Miraflores Locks (Panama Canal), the colonial part of its capital and its monuments and craft markets and the famous Albrook Mall. They were also treated to a traditional Panamanian dinner and dance show where they experienced a true taste of Panama’s traditional culture.

The students of Bishop Anstey High School Port-of-Spain had a rich Spanish Language experience through their tours; and multiple occasions to truly speak Spanish.
