Last Sunday the Claxton Bay Fishermen’s Association together with the Seafood Industry Development Company (SIDC) observed Fisherman’s Day 2012. The celebration included two cooking competitions, one featuring a fish pelau and the other fish broth. The competition was keenly contested and while some participants chose to reveal their secret ingredients, others were not so inclined.

Fisherman’s Day is actually celebrated on June 29 (Friday), the feast day of the Christian Saint Peter, who, according to the Bible, was a fisherman when Jesus called him to be a disciple.

Peter is believed to have been the first pope and is the patron saint of fisherfolk.

However since the fisherfolk will be out on the seas on that day, the Claxton Bay community chose June 24 to hold the event.

Fazal Mohammed, one of the entrants in the fish pelau competition held at the Claxton Bay Fishing Facility, advised that the fish should be fried then stewed to prevent it from crumbling and becoming lost among the other ingredients.

Other dishes included barbecue fish which was expertly prepared by Mahadeo Motilal and spicy shrimp kebabs, a specialty of Tricia Bedaissie of the Pushers Crew.

The event was well attended and entertainment for the afternoon’s proceedings was provided by East Indian dancers and vocalist Girlie Sahadeo.
