Talent Contest Finals at Creative Arts Centre

Friday, July 20 2012

Two close friends, Wendel Mc Burnie and Bernard Christopher Brereton will come up against each other in the Fifth Annual Talent Contest Finals at the Creative Arts Centre tomorrow (July 21). There are ten other finalists in the show

Mc Burnie who hails from Marabella and is often referred to as the next Baron because of the striking similarity of his voice to the popular calypsonian’s, is relatively new to the music scene, while Brereton comes from a singing family in Princes Town. They are both hoping to capture the crown tomorrow night.

Brereton who goes by the name, “Christopher B” told Newsday he placed seventh in last year’s competition but admitted he had certain challenges. For one, the competition was held on the very day he was getting married, so he had to run away for a while, perform and rush back to the wedding.

This time he says he is going all out to win.

Brereton performs at weddings, parties and restaurants. He is also a tutor with the Best Village programme for many years. In 2008 he won the title of best all round performer, best actor. Also in 2008 he won the judiciary calypso competition and has been a finalist in the Southern marines’ talent expressions and the South central island productions’ talent contest.

Mc Burnie who uses the sobriquet, “La Prochaine” has composed a tribute to Baron which he hopes to release before Independence. In total he says he has written nine songs, and recorded four to date. His biggest success thus far has been winning the 105 Soca Mimic Competition in 2010.
