Monday, January 28 2013
Her name is Nicole Applewhite and she was recently awarded the title of Grand Master of Dance Degree in American Style Smooth Dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, V/Waltz). This was completed at the Ballroom Dance Teachers College in San Francisco, California on September 21, 2012.
Dance, music and teaching were her "favourite things" and the bright lights of the stage posed no problem for Applewhite. As a matter of fact upon leaving secondary school, Applewhite became a member of "The Belvedere" under the musical direction of Richard Tang Yuk. She sang and danced in the Belvedere's productions of “South Quay Story”, “An Evening with Cole Porter” “The Belvedere in Concert” to name a few.
Applewhite's teaching ability and skills became honed when she became a training officer at her current work place, having had the opportunity to train staff at all levels.
She became seriously interested in ballroom dance since her mother opened and ran her Ballroom Dance Studio – "Sophisticats Social and Ballroom Dance Teachers Studio" – since 2002. The school's mission is to raise the standard of ballroom dance in Trinidad and Tobago and to provide quality dance instruction to students and aspiring ballroom dance teachers.
This lead to the process of being professionally qualified and a relationship with Diane Jarmolow, the founder and director of "Ballroom Dance Teachers College" (BDTC), the first ever vocational ballroom dance teachers training in the United States. Jarmolow is also a DVIDA (Dance Vision International Dance Association) National Examiner and the originator of their new innovative system of professional certification.
Applewhite has attended two intensive training sessions at Dance Vision Mastery Camps in Las Vegas and twice in 2012 at BDTC, Oakland California. At BDTC, she trained with Jarmolow and David Weise, professional ballroom dancer/teacher who in 2006 placed second in the World Championship Smooth Division.
Applewhite holds a number of dance certifications including DVIDA Associate American Style Smooth, DVIDA Master American Style Smooth, DVIDA Grand Master American Style Smooth, and DVIDA Associate American Style Rhythm.
Applewhite is scheduled to attend further training at BDTC later this year to complete her certification in the USISTD – Bronze International Style Standard Dances (Quickstep, Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and V/Waltz).
