Kids spend Easter learning Spanish culture, language

By Desiree Sampson Monday, April 15 2013

Can your child speak Spanglish? If they were one of the children at this year’s Bilingual Easter Camp the answer would be yes.

The camp, now in its third year, is run by a team of five Venezuelans led by Andreina Briceno-Brown, with the assistance of a few local camp counsellors.

Through play, culture and creativity, these children from as young as four years old, learned not only the language but also the culture of the Spanish people.

Over eight days during the Easter vacation, they designed their own camp T-shirts, played baseball, danced and sang songs all while learning the Spanish language. So much so that on the closing day, the children, along with their counsellors, staged a show with all performances entirely in Spanish. They performed skits, songs and even the filming of a movie scene, much to the delight of the parents gathered.

At the end of the closing day, all the children were awarded certificates. One gentleman, who sponsored nine children from Febeau Government Primary school in Laventille expressed his hope that parents will find ways to help their children to build on this foundation and so further their ability to speak the language fluently.
