Young soca couple Ian “Bunji Garlin” Alvarez and Fay-Ann Lyons will tie the knot this weekend after two years of happy partnership. Newsday spoke to the couple about the upcoming nuptials.

“I feel pretty comfortable about it,” 26-year-old Fay-Ann told Newsday. “A lot of people have been asking me how I feel but it is not a cliff that I am jumping off so there is no reason to be nervous or to get nervous about it. There is really nothing to be scared of.”

The more laid back Bunji, 27, said, “I feel cool, just good, excited inside and no nervousness. I am looking forward to enjoying the day and getting over it eventually. Because that day is going to be hectic so it can’t last forever.”

The couple who asked that the venue for both the ceremony and reception not be published, has not yet planned a honeymoon as both are performing artistes who are normally heavily booked at this time of year. The only thing they know is that it will be outside of Trinidad.

On the big day both Bunji and Fay-Ann will be wearing white. And while Fay-Ann’s wedding dress and a second dress for the reception have been specially flown into the country from a boutique in New York, USA by her sponsor Micles, Bunji has opted to buy his own suit in New York.

Meanwhile the bride will be given away by Austin “Superblue” Lyons, the eight-time Road March winner in Trinidad and Tobago in his traditional blue, this time a suit flown in from New York especially for the occasion. Some 300-350 guests have been invited which include family, close friends, politicians, fellow artistes such as Maximus Dan, Shurwayne Winchester, Ronnie Mc Intosh, Iwer George, Fireball and Destra, and other overseas guests. Young artistes Candi Hoyte and Lil Bits will be bridesmaids.

At the reception, entertainment will come from Fay-Ann’s grandmother Ruby Steel, who will be rendering a song for the couple, and her best friend Michelle Pilgrim has already choreographed a dance for the occasion.

Other music is expected to come from Los Dinamicos Parang Band and a couple of deejays. The menu for the evening will consist of Chinese Creole and Indian dishes, from fish to wild meat, tamarind balls to fudge, and pastelles to bake n’ shark.

Faye-Ann began her singing career back in 2000. She went on to win the Road March title in 2003 in Trinidad and Tobago for the hit song “Display.” Bunji Garlin born Ian Alvarez hails from Arima, Trinidad and Tobago.

As a young boy, Bunji started singing at the Arima Comprehensive School in Trinidad and Tobago. After completing school, Bunji started chanting under the name of “Little Bounty.” By age 18, Bunji had developed a very unique chanting style.
