Tobago turned upside down

By SEETA PERSAD Friday, April 27 2007

America’s pop diva Diana Ross will join with pop legend Sir Elton John for the much anticipated, Plymouth Jazz Festival in Tobago this weekend. All roads lead to Plymouth for the third annual festival which kicks off tonight and will continue until Sunday.

This is an effort of CL Communications in collaboration with the Tobago House of Assembly and the La Roda Group. The spectacular event has been sold out way in advance as thousands of Caribbean people come together to enjoy mood music as only Tobago could offer. The event promises to be memorable as the curtain goes up for performances by Elton, Diana, Al Green, Heather Headley, Gladys Knight, LL Cool J, and a host of others.

Chief executive at CL Communications, Anthony Maharaj, said, “CL Communications is committed to keeping the promise of its parent company CL Financial to build cultural bridges across the global village.”

Executive Chairman at CL Communications, Lawrence Duprey, noted in an earlier report, “CL never says we would like to make it happen, we make it happen.”

In the last two years CL Communications brought in big names like Stevie Wonder, Babyface, Natalie Cole, The O’Jays, Sting, Vanessa Williams, Patti La Belle, Diddy and special guests Chris Tucker, Anthony Anderson and Gabrielle Union, for the festival.

Maharaj emphasised that the Plymouth Jazz Festival is an event for which Tobago would be known as the ‘‘Caribbean paradise of sun, sand and song,’’ and ‘‘Tobago the tourism capital of the Caribbean.’’

As advertised, the multi-platinum and Grammy Award winner Sir Elton John headlines the Plymouth Jazz Festival. As an artiste with more than 35 years in the business, John holds the record of having a top 40 single every year since his debut in 1970 with ‘‘Your Song,’’

Songs such as ‘‘Rocket Man,’’ ‘‘Daniel,’’ ‘‘Bennie and The Jets,’’ ‘‘Sorry seems to be the hardest Word,’’ ‘‘Little Jeannie,’’ ‘‘Nikita,’’ John Lennon’s comeback hit which he co-wrote, ‘‘Whatever gets you Through the night,’’ ‘‘Sacrifice,’’ ‘‘The One,’’ the animated movie, The Lion King’s “Circle of Life”, and his 1997 tribute to the late Princess Diana ‘‘Candle in the Wind,’’ which was originally written about Marilyn Monroe in 1987, have made Sir Elton John one of the greatest singers, songwriters and pianists of all time.

Diana Ross is a mutliple Grammy Award winning-singer and actress, whose musical repertoire spans R&B, soul, disco, and pop. Ross first gained prominence as lead of the 1960s girl group, The Supremes, before establishing a successful solo career in 1970. During the 1970s and 1980s, Ross became one of the most successful female artistes of the rock era, also crossing over into film, television and Broadway. During her career, Ross has been awarded a Tony Award; nominated for two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award.

In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the female entertainer of the century.

The Guinness Book of World Records declared Diana Ross as the most successful female music artiste of the 20th century with a record 18 American number-one singles; six of them recorded solo and the remaining dozen from her work with the Supremes.
