A SURE sign that the cruise ship season is in full swing was when the majestic MV Sea Princess docked in Port-of-Spain recently.

Passengers from the vessel were soon taking in the sights and sounds of the city, shopping in downtown, or taking advantage of one of the many guided tours available. Members of the Tourism Development Corporation’s (TDC) visitor guide programme were strategically positioned around Port-of-Spain to assist the visitors and ensure their safety during their short stop over..

The vessel’s visit to Port-of-Spain was no ordinary cruise ship call. Minister of Tourism Joseph Ross and several members of the media were invited on board for a tour of the vessel’s luxurious facilities.

The Sea Princess, which is operated by Princess Cruises Limited, can carry up to 1,950 passengers and is spacious enough to offer a variety of entertainment, bars and dining options. Facilities on board include three swimming pools, movie theatres, spa and open view gymnasium, a night club and a lavish casino and a shopping gallery.

During a reception following the tour, Charles Carvalho, of Trinidad and Tobago Sightseeing Tours, was presented with a “Tour of the Season” award by the Florida Princess Cruises for the 2006-2007 cruise ship season. Carvalho was honoured by the cruise line for his dedication to providing passengers with safe, well organised tours.

Graham Davis, Manager of Shore Operations explained: “Passengers were impressed with the operational efficiency and overall quality of the tour.”

He told Carvalho: “Your tour has received the highest ratings on positive passenger comments and was noted as an excellent value.”

Minister Ross received a plaque from the cruise line on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism.

The Tourism Minister said there are tremendous opportunities for the “small man” in the cruise ship business.

“So many people can benefit significantly. The challenge is to evaluate the benefits to the economy,” he said, adding that the increased number of visitors that cruise liners bring to this country it underscores the opportunities that exists in that industry.
