New works from Beston and Lobo

By ANNE HILTON Monday, November 10 2008

“Where does one go from here?” was the question I asked of Gaby Beston on reviewing her first solo exhibition of large paintings of banana plants, ginger lilies, heliconias and assorted large leaves at Horizons Art Gallery in February 2005. Figs and heliconias featured in the same artist’s work in a joint exhibition with Danielle Du Boulay in November 2006.

And in a joint exhibition with Enrique Lobo that opened in Horizons Art Gallery on Tuesday, November 4, leaves and flowers of the larger members of the backyard plant kingdom are still the chosen subjects for Gaby Beston’s brushes. Oh well, if they sell, and it appears they do at between $2,500 and $15,000, who could blame her for sticking to her last? I leave photographs of her work to speak for her.

Enrique Lobo is a Venezuelan artist related by marriage to Gaby Beston. He has an impressive list of exhibitions in Venezuela and in France, dating back to 1987, to his credit — and on viewing his work one can see why. Impressionist in genre leaning towards the abstract is perhaps the best description of his work.

Like the rest of his work on exhibit, “Fill my Soul” (“Llena mi alma”) is deceptively simple, the flowers springing out from the confinement of the triangular-shaped vase, are a joy to behold, lifting the spirit. “Andean Flowers” (“Flores Andenas Pompones”) are a still life I could well live with — enough said — while I quarrel with the English title “Teapot” preferring the translation from the Spanish “Cafetera” a piece of grace and simplicity.

The works of Gaby Beston and Enrique Lobo remain on exhibit at Horizons Art Gallery until November 15.
