New bookstore in Gulf City

By ANNE HILTON Wednesday, April 8 2009

THE PHOTOGRAPHS tell (almost) all the story of Nigel Khan, Bookseller’s latest bookstore in Gulf City. Space does not allow for photographs of all the varied sections devoted to (almost) every kind of book under the sun.

And, for once, we were able to photograph the man himself in his very latest bookstore. Judging by the number displayed on shelves too long and too many to capture in one shot, the Gulf City bookstore has the greatest number and variety of magazines of any bookstore in TT.

The “reader-friendly” atmosphere of a browse bar where one can sit, read a page (or five) to check that a book will be one you’ll enjoy reading, or that it has the information you’re looking for.

While anyone with access to the Internet tends to “Google” for information, there are some things (like crafts, for example) best learned from books. Some customers prefer to help themselves to a cup of coffee and sink into one of the overstuffed sofas to browse a selection of books that look promising.

The children are not forgotten; child-sized chairs and the invitation “Feel Free To Read” encourage the younger generation to read the classic children’s stories, Thomas the Tank Engine and the Tales of Beatrix Potter spring to mind for the younger readers. Meanwhile for teens and young people of all ages who enjoy fantasy, there is “The Hobbit”, the “Harry Potter” series, “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and “Brisingr”, the last book in Christopher Paolini’s “Eragon” trilogy.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the great variety of books, not to speak of CDs and DVDs, available at the spanking new Gulf City store.
