A 62 year-old retiree wants to know why it is taking so long to receive his NIS pension contribution cheque.

Lennox Williams, of Cochrane Village, Guapo, said he worked for an offshore company for over eight years and retired last year.

He said he was told he was entitled to a lump sum payment.

That was in June of last year and Williams said he is still waiting.

“I have been visiting the NIS office on a regular basis and was told my matter was being investigated.”

He said he could not understand why since he was already told he was entitled to receive the lump sum payment.

Daphne Garcia, supervisor, at the NIS’ branch in Point Fortin, said Williams may have misunderstood what he was told.

She said they don’t investigate claimants, but try to determine if all his contributions were made and whether there were outstanding payments.

“What we said to him was we are really making every effort to deal with his matter at the moment. We are working assiduously right now to have those claims expedited. I would advise him to ask to speak with the supervisor or manager when he visits again so we could advise him on what is happening.”
