OFFICIALS at the Ministry of Works and Transport, on Wednesday last, visited Moolai Trace East off Penal/ Quinam Road, Penal, after residents pleaded with the authorities to repair the bridge which had partially collapsed.

But although residents are grateful for the visit, they fear within the next few days the remainder of the bridge, which can only take the weight of humans, may completely collapse.

Ragoonath Tagoo, secretary of the Shiva Shakti Mandir, which is located a short distance from the bridge, said the situation is getting worse.

The dilapidated wooden bridge broke four weeks ago. Residents still risked their lives by crossing over what remained of the bridge as it is the only access route they have.

If the entire bridge collapses, Tagoo fears they may have to walk in the river to get home.

“The officials from the ministry said they have to submit a report before anything can be done. The bridge sunk two feet into the river. It is a good thing there is no water in the river because we will have no choice but to walk in it to go home,” Tagoo said, adding that it is also affecting worship at the mandir.

Tagoo pleaded with the authorities to speed up the process and construct a new bridge.

“We need for them to do something now. How long do we have to endure this before we get a new bridge?” he asked.
