No pay for ancillary workers

Thursday, July 29 2010

FOR THE past two months, ancillary employees at Presbyterian run primary schools have not been paid their salary. The employees, who say they work for approximately $3,262 a month, said they have not been paid for the months of June and July.

“The last pay we got was in May. June passed and then July and nothing. We work hard cleaning, scrubbing windows and floors of these schools to ensure teachers and students have a clean place to operate in. We’ve kept our end of the bargain but have nothing to show for it,” a worker said.

Another worker, Gayatree Shandoo, 40, said she and other employees complained to the Presbyterian School Board but nothing was done. “We are fed up calling the board and getting no word on why we are not being paid or when the money will come our way,” Shandoo said. Another employee explained that he was forced to borrow money to offset the cost for medical attention for his wife after she suffered a heart attack.

Contacted for comment, Primary School Presbyterian board chairman Carlos Lakhan said the board has not yet received the grant from the Education Ministry to pay the employees.

Lakhan said he is in constant communication with the Ministry and hopes to have word soon.
