The budget was a ‘no-brainer’

Friday, September 10 2010

THE EDITOR: I dutifully listened to Mr Dookeran, as all good patriotic citizens should have. I am no economist but the Budget 2010 - 2011, was a no-brainer. One did not have to be Albert Schweitzer to realise that the People’s Partnership was “chinksing” again with the promises. Plus, my mind only recognised the futility of the People’s Partnership being able to generate enough revenue once they had decided to finally axe the tax and kill off Alutrint.

Turning Laventille into a quaint area mimicing Old Havana boggles the mind. Perhaps the People’s Partnersip do not realise the historic revolutionary events that stopped the modernising of Havana. The quaint old cars and buildings and donkey carts are not romance but evidence of Castro removing Cuba and its people away from the rest of the world.

The police will need more than an extra thousand dollars to pay expenses when inflation doubles beyond 20 percent The bicycles promised will only work chasing bandits at the beach. These days its only safe to ride your bike on the savannah pitch.

There was nothing in this budget to galvanise the imagination. It is supposed to be the understanding thing to give Mrs Persad-Bissessar and her coalition partners a honeymoon period. Only the extremely wealthy can afford to enjoy a four month honeymoon period. I am totally afraid to ask about the Heritage Fund.

Perhaps the most quaint of the ideas mooted was that the PP would show citizens how to save for their financial future. The unemployed and they will be many, will have nothing to save.
