THE EDITOR: The announcement by China’s Vice-Premier Wang Qishan at the just-concluded two-day parley held at the Hyatt that Caricom countries will benefit from a US one billion dollar loan for economic and social development is a commendable act of humanitarianism and serious world leadership.

Rather than going into the pros and cons of this magnificent loan disbursement, whether it is an act of colonialsm or neo-colonialism, it is commendable that China has come to the financial rescue of the Caribbean.

I am proposing that Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar seeks the technical, financial and human resource capacities to construct a bridge from Toco to Tobago with a total Chinese input.

In the 1960s the late Dr Rudranath Capildeo, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, had proposed such a project, and this project could have put aside any attempts of secession.

The PNM Government had called him the, “mad scientist”.

If they had applied his suggestion, both Trinidad and Tobago could have been closer economically, socially and physically.

The People’s Partnership Government should waste no time and bring this dream into fruition as quickly as possible.
