THE EDITOR: As a much maligned fisherman from a north-east coastal village, I have always felt that we were targeted as the bad guys when it comes to turtle conservation. We are always blamed as being responsible for killing turtles in our nets and our need to provide a living for our families is not taken into consideration. No one seems to understand that we do not like to catch turtles in our nets as we know they need to be protected and the damage to our nets hurt our pockets.

Finally, I read in a newspaper story on the Manzanilla turtle situation that some attention is being paid to our point of view. It would be good if some measures are taken where if we don’t fish, we can still make a few dollars to look after ourselves and our families. We would willingly do our part to help protect the turtles.

It is time for those in charge to really try and reach out to us and not treat us as the enemies.
