Deliver baby Simeon report in record time

Tuesday, April 1 2014

THE EDITOR: The high infant mortality rate in Trinidad and Tobago is frightening requiring something urgent be done. As a mother, I can only imagine the pain one suffers at the loss of a child at birth.

Many are scared to go into our public health facilities for this reason. After a testing period for nine months and then having to wait long hours for a bed when this period ends, in a few minutes the joy of giving birth is taken away with no hope of every regaining it.

The appointment of an independent committee to review the death of baby Simeon whose head was cut during a Caesarean section resulting in his death is clearly a positive one. The committee which includes the former head of the neonatal clinic Neonatologist and former head of the Neonatal Unit at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital Dr Petronella Manning-Alleyne gives an indication that we can expect an unbiased report.

The committee would present its findings to the Attorney General and not to the Minister of Health. This is also a great strategy since the findings would not just focus on the specific incident but would lead to new policies and procedures are definitely needed to improve the level of health care.

Hopefully the committee would determine what went wrong, why it went wrong and what should be done to prevent it from recurring in a timely manner. Iím urging this committee therefore to step up to the task and deliver this report in record time.

We would like to thank the Attorney General for putting this committee in place.
