Bring back school licks

Tuesday, April 29 2014

THE EDITOR: The stage is all set to crucify a parent for beating her child and most of the experts have confirmed the beating as abuse.

I remember a Government minister freeing his son from a cell, a senior police officer freeing his brother from a cell and another minister’s son charged for assault. Come, we cannot be so naive to believe that many other top officials have carried out the same act and were in position to pull the necessary strings to ease the situation.

The wider picture is that this is a wake-up call to all. We have played follow the leader in our laws by following the laws of developed countries. In America the authorities are struggling to control the many students who carry guns to school and open fire in classrooms killing other students.

Is this a backlash of “spare the rod”. We have a lot of expert opinions after the fact.

In Trinidad we have seen an emergence of “the fighting school girls”. Could our experts say if it is a fact that we have concentrated on our male students’ behaviour while neglecting the female students which has allowed them to develop their fighting abilities. I humbly believe that we should bring back corporal punishment to the age of twelve or thirteen. We can have experts meeting with different PTA explaining the fine line between abuse and discipline. If we start now we can stop the bigger problem.
