THE EDITOR: It is quite amazing how Trinidadians have a special, unmatched penchant for taking non-issues and making them national issues and even blowing them out of proportion and making them national debates. Elton John’s sexual preference and Danah’s lewd dancing at the instigation of a performer Akon are not national issues. They are trivial matters, now very stale and best left alone. Why raise the “dead”?

So what if Elton John is gay? There are thousands of gay men in Trinidad. Should we hunt them down and force them to leave the island or put them in perpetual quarantine? And, in the case of Danah, it was an impressionable mindset of a 14-year-old being lured on stage by an adult male she liked to see perform. Is the girl wrong for this? The innocence of youth possibly militated against better judgement and or discretion. Still letters are appearing in the press with an incomprehensible degree of consistency on these two non-issues.

What the nation should be focused on is the failure of our Government in many aspects of our existence: water shortages, crime, school violence, failure of Government senators to answer questions in the Senate, the Landate affair, failure of police officers to turn up in court, failure of witnesses to testify, rumblings in the judiciary and accusations of political bias within etc. I can go on and on but for media space. And, so what if I am a lesbian, that is my personal business.
