Murder accused who escaped police custody, recaptured

THE murder accused who escaped legal custody at the Princes Town Magistrates’ Court earlier this week was yesterday recaptured by police officers while liming at a bar in New Grant, Princes Town.

Wayne Johnson, 26, of Buen Intento, knocked down one of two police officers who were escorting him and another prisoner to the nearby police station on Tuesday, and escaped on foot. The policeman reportedly sustained a fractured ankle, and is currently on injury leave.

Johnson had earlier re-appeared before magistrate Rea Roopchan in the First Court on a 2008 robbery charge by PC Bridgemohan and was being escorted out of the courtroom when the incident occurred.

A police report stated that yesterday at about 11.45 am police officers received information and went to Touch of Class Bar located at Brothers Road, New Grant, where they arrested Johnson and another man who is believed to have harboured the escapee.

Johnson is also charged with last year’s May murder of Brent Ford Eustace Wikinson alias Salim and Fordy , 23, of St Julian’s Village. Wikinson’s body was found inside a plastic bag at Petrotrin waste tank at Forest Road, Fyzabad. Up to late yesterday both men were being interrogated at the Princes Town Police Station. They are expected to appear in court on Monday on the respective charges. Princes Town Police are contuining investigations.
