Baby Faith returns to hospital today

By Odette Loney Monday, August 24 2009

FAMILY of one-month-old Faith Davis are preparing for her return today to the Paediatric Ward of the Wendy Fitzwilliam Children’s Hospital, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) Mt Hope, where she is to resume intravenous treatment for an infection to the skin graft on her right wrist.

Baby Faith was released into the care of her parents, Earl and Maureen Davis, last week, but doctors said Faith must return to the hospital today, to resume treatment for the infection. The child was discharged to give her mother a few days rest at home at Brothers Road, New Grant. Doctors said the infection is impeding healing of a skin graft she received to treat serious burns to the hand. During the weekend, Faith’s siblings sent “Thank you” notes to members of the public for the assistance they received while the child was in hospital.

Faith was just six days old when she was rushed to San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) suffering from seizures and doctors administered intravenous medication to treat her condition. However two days later, Faith developed burns to her right wrist and hand where intravenous fluid leaked out of her tiny veins and into the surrounding tissue. Doctors transferred Faith to the EWMSC for her first skin graft surgery to treat the serious burns, which might hinder her use of her right hand for life. She underwent a second skin graft surgery soon after the first.

Her parents still plan to pursue legal action against the South West Regional Health Authority (SWRHA) and the San Fernando General Hospital for negligence.

Doctors said the child will not be able to go home until the infection was gone. Meanwhile, Earl, 39, continues to appeal to the public for financial assistance since caring for Faith is a full time job and as vegetable farmers the couple, who have five other children, do not have a steady income. Donations can be made to Faith’s account 3417058751 at any RBTT Bank branch.
