Man drowns at Moruga beach

By ODETTE LONEY Tuesday, September 22 2009

A MEMBER of a church group drowned in the sea off Moruga while a University of the West Indies student is believed to have drowned at Columbus Bay, in two unrelated incidents which occurred over the long Eid holiday weekend.

The body of Darren Gildharrie, 37, of Fanum Village in Guaracara was found along La Ruffin beach in Moruga yesterday evening. But the search continued last night for the body of Keith Simon, 21, of Cypress Road, Homeland Gardens in Cunupia.

Simon was one of four friends who went swimming at Columbus Bay in Cedros on Saturday at about 3 pm, when they all got into difficulty. All except Simon made it to shore. The teen who is feared drowned, was a third-year UWI student.

Up to late yesterday, officers from the Coast Guard were searching the sea for Simon’s body.

In the other incident, Gildharrie was among a 16-member church group which camped on the La Ruffin beach over the weekend. On Sunday evening, they cast a fishing seine which they left in the water overnight. Yesterday when six members of the group including Gildharrie went to pull in the seine, a strong undercurrent pulled Gildharrie into deep water and he disappeared under the water at about 11 am. His body was found a short time later washed ashore. Investigations are continuing.
