A 36-YEAR-OLD DVD vendor and father of three was gunned down along Broadway in Port- of-Spain on Wednesday night. But the story does not end there.

Police officers on mobile patrol claimed they saw a black car speed off from the murder scene and followed it to the Beetham Estate where they shot and killed two men, whom the officers said, were occupants of the car.

However, angry, grieving relatives of the two dead men claimed the officers killed the wrong men.

According to a police report, at about 10 pm, Anderson ‘Andy’ Bynoe, 36, of Arima was at his DVD stall along the sidewalk near Bhagan’s Drug Store when two men alighted from a black Nissan B15 car with one of them shooting Bynoe who fell to the pavement and bled to death.

Officers of the Inter-Agency Task Force were on patrol in the area when they noticed a car speeding from the crime scene. The officers gave chase and later intercepted the car near 19th Street where they opened fire on two men. The men were taken to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital where they were pronounced dead-on-arrival.

They were later identified as: Fabian Mauge, 26, and Ricky Roberts, 39. Speaking outside the Forensic Science Centre in St James, Mauge’s father Wayne yesterday condemned the killing of his son and Roberts by the police.

Wayne said his son had just returned from a birthday party and was too drunk at the time to get himself involved in a criminal act.

“He had just returned from a birthday party and all of us was at the corner playing a game of dominoes. My son Fabian tried to play but he was swaying with drunkenness. I told him to go home and sleep. Minutes later, we saw three jeeps speeding into the Beetham and by that time I went inside and was peeping through the window,” Wayne said.

“The police, two in plain clothes and the rest in uniform came out of the jeeps and approached the guys on the block cursing them and threatening them saying that they came to kill all of them. By that time, the police opened fire. I saw one of the men fall in front of my gate but I didn’t know that it was my own son who had gotten shot along with Ricky.”

“My son do not have a licence but he can drive. But I am telling you that he was too drunk to do anything that night. He and Ricky were no where near Port-of-Spain and they are innocent. My son was not that kind of person to kill people. He was no saint but he was not a killer,” Wayne said.

A relative of Roberts who asked not to be identified said Roberts was a father of two and moments before being killed, had celebrated his third anniversary of being with his girlfriend. Bynoe’s relatives, who asked not to be identified, said his family was told by police that shortly after he was killed, they (the police) had solved the murder by killing two men in the Beetham.

“I really don’t know what happened and we are going by what the police told us,” the woman said. She added that Bynoe sold DVDs in Port-of-Spain for the past ten years and she described him as a “hard-working, good man”.
