TWO pirogues were impounded and a quantity of illegal firecrackers seized by Police and Customs and Excise officers in Los Iros on Wednesday evening. Investigators believe the items were being brought into the country in time for Divali celebrations tomorrow.

The officers were assisted by a National Security helicopter. Three Erin villagers and two Venezuelan women were arrested.

The Venezuelans were handed over to the Immigration Department in Port-of-Spain and are expected to be deported to their homeland. According to a police report, at about 5.30 pm on Wednesday, officers acting on a tip-off went to the Erin beach where they intercepted two boats with the Venezuelan women and firecrackers on board.

Three Erin villagers were also taken into custody — a 17-year-old woman and a female friend were handed over to the Immigration department.
