An Avocat family is questioning the cause of death of their loved one who died at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH) yesterday.

Common law husband of 42-year-old deceased Myroon Mohammed, Deoraj Lalchan, told Newsday his wife started complaining of fever, chest pains and coughing last Monday, and was taken to a private doctor.

The mother of seven was given a prescription to purchase medication, but when the symptoms persisted she was taken to another private health facility in Penal on Saturday night and then to the Princes Town district health facility on Sunday night, where she was immediately transported by ambulance to the SFGH, said Lalchan.

Wiping away tears at the family’s home at St.Johns Trace, Avocat, her daughter Sunita Harripersad said her mother was warded at Ward 7 at the SFGH. “We visited her every day, she had difficulty breathing, and she was hooked up to a ventilator, and was unable to eat anything.”

Lalchan said “at around 11 am yesterday I received a call from the hospital saying my wife had the Influenza A/H1N1 and was being transferred to the High Dependency Unit (HDU).

“At around 1 pm, I got another call informing me that my wife had died five minutes ago.”
