IAN WELCH, Managing Director of PCS Nitrogen Trinidad and Edwin Pouchet, leader of Silver Stars Steel Orchestra, unveiled a new logo for the band on Saturday night, cementing their sponsorship arrangement.
This was done during the official launch of the band’s new identity as PCS Nitrogen Trinidad Silver Stars Steel Orchestra on Saturday night at the pan yard on Tragarete Road.
Newly elected Pan Trinbago President Keith Diaz, who spoke at the function, recalled that Trinidad and Tobago’s first Prime Minister Dr. Eric Williams had embarked on a massive drive for sponsorship of steel bands and he congratulated the band on attaining their new sponsor.
Silver Stars’ Manager, Keith Byer, said the new sponsor had discovered a gold mine in Silver Stars and the marriage between PCS Nitrogen Trinidad and reigning Panorama champs is based on trust, integrity, accountability and mutual understanding.
“This is a marriage that no man can put asunder. It will be long and smooth,” Byer predicted.
For the benefit of those in the audience Welch stated that November 21 is “World Hello Day”, where you say hello to ten people you do not know and that it is used for communication and not conflict. He then told the audience that our rhythm and music are the most communicative way we have through all genres of TT music before stating that the said night was about the power of rhythm.
Welch quoted from Shadow’s popular calypso “Dingolay” to emphasis his point that TT’s rhythm and music are powerful tools of communication. He said there is a need for a relationship between culture and the corporate sector.
Junia Regrello, Parliamentary Secretary in the Culture Ministry expressed his elation at the “significant marriage” that has taken place between a progressive corporate business organisation, PCS Nitrogen, and a power house in the steel band movement, the Silver Stars Steel Orchestra.
“This marriage is significant because it is taking place at a time when the global financial and economic crisis provides a plausible explanation for the reluctance of corporate organisations to offer sponsorship to steel orchestras,” said Regrello
He congratulated both parties for forging a new relationship which “strengthens the bonds between our corporate citizens and our indigenous culture and which will redound to the benefit of our nation”.
Following the official part of the programme, Silver Stars delivered a concert style performance before the public was invited in for the opening of the band’s 19th Annual Parang and Steel show.
