GOOD FOR SECOND: Victoria Shermilla delivers a powerful rendition of 'Pain' which earned her the runner up position yesterday at the Jr Calypso Monarc...
AARON DUNCAN created history yesterday when, at age six, he became the youngest ever Junior Calypso Monarch, with his song “Don’t Waste It” dazzling the judges and audience and blowing away the rest of the competition.
When it was announced that Aaron of Newtown Boys RC Primary School had won, the audience erupted into applause and cheers. He beat 14 other contestants to walk away with the crown and the handsome earnings of $25,000.
This was not his first victory for the Carnival season as he also placed first in the Calypso Pioneers competition on February 1.
Dressed “to the nines” in an orange and white suit, young Aaron commanded the audience with his lyrics which described his mother telling him not to waste food, water or toothpaste as there were children all over the world who didn’t have. He charmed the crowd with his smooth dance moves and vocal skills as he belted out four verses. Even before his song was finished, the crowd was already giving him a standing ovation.
With the announcement that her son had won, an ecstatic Lydia Bryan rushed to the front of the stage and embraced Aaron who wore a broad grin on his face. “I did it mom,” he shouted.
“I know he worked so hard to get where he is but for him to actually win...oh gosh, it is absolutely amazing. I am so proud of him right now...my little boy, the national junior calypso monarch. Wow,” Bryan gushed.
And to reward her son for his achievement, Bryan said she will get him something he has been longing for — a laptop computer. Interviewed after his command performance, Aaron was very soft-spoken compared to his fiery, bold performance of the song written by Larry Harewood, on stage.
“I feel good, I didn’t expect to win so I am really happy. I enjoyed performing it,” he said.
Placing second was Victoria Shermilla of the College Of Science, Technology and Applied Arts (COSTAATT) with her passionate rendition of the song ‘Pain’, in which she warned young girls about teenage pregnancy. Third place went to Garve Sandy from Bishop’s High School in Tobago with her song “Fool Games”, which addressed school delinquency.
